As one of those "VHF rookies" I thought I would comment. I have been active in HF contests for a long time (licensed 1986) but entered my first VHF contest in 2014 (June VHF). I operated as qrp/porta

I tried the cell SMS tweet-to-spot function a few times, but I don't think self-spotting makes much difference for a qrp/portable in a low VHF activity region (EM53). I also tried to find someone on

Alex, You have a lot of activity compared to other areas of the country! Here I didn't work or ever hear a single station in my own grid (EM53). Several adjacent grids had no activity either. I used

Yes, trees do make a difference on the higher bands. My qth is surrounded by 100' pines plus various lower trees. While I don't think it hurts too much on HF, cell phone service is noticeably weaker

I don't have a lot of experience yet operating MS, but the scattering geometry is pretty simple- you are scattering from meteor trails that are maybe 100 km above the ground. If you plug in 100km as

For portable stations it is easy to make your yagis simple to switch between horizontal and vertical polarization. For example, I made my yagis with the booms from 1" square aluminum.  The boom/mast
