The signal in New Mexico would suddenly pop up to 599, then fade slowly like a spent skyrocket. Worked QRP with my K2 at one of those peaks. But he deserves any credit; what was he using to receive??

Ran into the pulsating noise in a report from V85AA. He said it might be local to him, and it is over-the-horizon-radar, but he doesn't know whose, Chinese, Japanese, or American from the Aleutians ?
