GET THE FT-100D!!! I had the 817, great rig, but frustrating at only 2.5 or 5 watts. i sold mine, got the ft-100d and can talk to anyone i hear. from my van with it at 50 watts and a pro-am 20-mtr wh

One thing I seem to recall from the review of the original FT-100 is that it still consumed a lot of power even at low output settings. You might want to check the ARRL review of the radio. W8KX
