Bob, there is a known problem with windoze XP and the parallel port. You need to get a small program called DLPORTIO It may be available in many locations but the only one I am currently aware of is

You do need this program but it is not a problem with XP, it is the way XP is designed (AND Win2K and WINNT) which is for security as only the OS or a Driver has the ability to access that hardware
