Well, Rajiv (N2RD) mentioned the USB->serial adaptors at http://www.ionetworks.com/products/pcp.html. I left them email yesterday and received the following response which would tend to disagree with

Likewise I heard from Silicon Valley Bus today and they support 5 bit. Ship from stock. Win9x/2000 drivers. DB9 connectors instead of dongles. List $399 which is consistent with what the others are c
