My only vehicle now is a Toyota Corolla. Difficult to rove with it unless I do some major constructions to mount the antennas on the car (which I haven't). I enjoy the QRP Portable Single-Op category
I hope to make it out at least for most of Sunday from the hill in EN50rl. I don't mind the cold as long as it's not raining ice (and even that hasn't stopped me in past years!) 73, Zack W9SZ _______
Wingrid is great if you have the grid squares, preferably the 6-character grids for both ends of the QSO. I used it in the 10 GHz contest. If you have a massive 432 array I can see getting the exact
I realized I never wrote up anything about my experiences in the January VHF Sweepstakes. In light of the recent Rover "lunchbox" debate, I thought it might be entertaining to see what one person exp
The thing I see being complained about here is the methods used by one or two groups to achieve massive scores. The methods more than the massive scores are the complaints. Are these so-called "lunch
If a Rover operates from a rare grid square on Saturday and conditions are dismal and I can't hear him or get his attention, we miss out. If he passes through the same grid on Sunday and conditions h
It's so much work for me to move once I've set up 10 bands on a hill that I don't want to take it down and reset up somewhere else. It takes over two hours for me to set up and again to tear down. I'

Now that's what I call forward thinking! For a couple years I've been toying with writing a short story for QST about the Intergalactic DX Contest. 73, Zack W9SZ _____________________________________
Sean and I go back a few years together as contesters. :-) I agree - the purpose of both HF and VHF contesting is to make as many QSO's as possible and to maximize your score. Strategies and techniqu
You might want to contact Bill Buchanan WB4WEN. Not sure if he's on this reflector. The last e-mail address I have for him is wb4wen@yahoo.com. He's been on Roan Mountain and Mt. Mitchell. 73, Zack W
Does the group have a name? For some reason, when I log onto Facebook and then click on that link, it just kicks me back to my home page. 73, Zack W9SZ _______________________________________________
I don't know why that wouldn't work. I go to hilltops all the time to try for microwave QSO's on skeds. You have the advantage of height without much feedline losses if your feedlines are only 15 fee
I don't know much about the 70 MHz band, since it is available in EU but not in the USA. Is it a band used by contesters? Since Cabrillo is primarily used for contest logs, I'd have to ask that quest
Interesting story. I tried to find your location on Google Earth but couldn't pick out a building that had a tower. Wish I had a place like that to operate from in the first place! I wasn't able to b
I work a lot of people in the contests with 10 watts on 432 and a 15 element homebrew beam on a 10 foot boom. I have been able to work anyone I could hear and routinely work into Milwaukee, Chicago,
Hi John, Yes, I've eoncountered that before and the caps still worked OK. The missing pieces may affect the mechanical stability but it might not be a big deal for your usage. 73, Zack W9SZ _________
I'd suspect that the 45 foot height advantage plus having the antennas out in the open is going to make up for any gain losses due to it being an LPA. 73, Zack W9SZ __________________________________
Interesting stuff! I was licensed in 1967 so I'm just a youngster to you all. But I started subscribing to both QST and 73 shortly after I got my Novice license. I met Wayne a few years ago at a loca
There is nothing wrong with OPERATING portable with higher power; you would just be in a different class than Single Op Portable (which is QRP 10 watts or less, as Gene noted). I've been in the Singl
