One can test the balun with a antenna analyzer and if it's bad then go ahead and open it up...it can be opened without breaking the plastic if you're carefull...at least mine was. It's been awhile b

Sure. A balun is a balun is a balun but sometimes matching the manufacturer for both balun and antenna seems to work better. I substituted a W2DU for a BN2000 on a TH7 and the swr went up slightly so

One other problem with the BN-86 balun is its tendency to 'short circuit' across the windings! This happened to me back in the 80's when I FIRST fired up my 15m yagi in the 'xmas tree' stack .. never
