All: Was cranking my US Tower HDX555 up after last nights ice storm when puff, the Fullton 1550 winch broke. I thought there would have been damage to the tower and antennas, but it came down much sl
The holes in the k2550 mounting plate do not match the holes in the K1550 mounting plate. When I replaced a k1550 with a k2550 I had to ream out some (I forget how many) of the holes by up to about 3
Al: Thanks for the reply. I took the liberty of attaching a short video of the winch after it failed; I sent it to your home address. It looks like the spring loaded latch (pawl) broke off completly.
I'm using 2550s on LM-470s here too and wasn't aware of the free-wheeling mode. I'd appreciate hearing the details too. 73, Joe _______________________________________________ _______________________
You'll be looking long and hard to find a better winch. I have used these winches on towers and in the traffic control industry (by the thousands) for over 20 years. A winch failure is not impossible
The K series winches are not designed or intended to freewheel. This is not a feature, but an anomaly. Dino - K6RIX dino@k6rix.com _______________________________________________ ____________________
Also keep in mind MOST other winches are designed/rated for pulling, not lifting. Please don't think because a winch is rated for 1500 lbs pulling it will lift that weight safely, it will not. The Fu
That's good to know. I have never seen the free wheeling problem here. 73, Joe _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ TowerTalk mailing list T
The winch on my HDX-555 is the only one of which I have experience, so I too was surprised at the screeching noise when lowering (i.e., tilting down) the tower. But closer examination showed that the
If you have even a moderate size antenna on the LM-470, bringing it back to vertical with the 1550 comes close to an isometric exercise. I would always alert the rescue squad whenever I was planning
When I raise/lower my UST TX-455 with the Fulton K1550, all the dogs in the neighborhood come running....and the horses head the other way. Not sure about the neighbors, since we're out in the countr
Raising as well as lowering? Mine screeches only when I am letting the cable out: when I am tilting the tower up (winding the cable in), I just get the clicking sound of the pawl and ratchet mechanis
Alan: Same here; the clutches come into play when the cable is letting out and they do make noise. There was a totally different noise when the winch failed. It was more like SNAP, SWISH, THUMP ; ).
Two questions: 1. I have an HDX5106 with a 2550. I feel that this winch is overloaded, in the same way that the guys with the "little" towers feel their 1550s are overloaded. Is there something even
When I first got the k1550 and it squealed so loudly I called Fulton winch to enquire about using a worm drive winch. I had experience with a worm drive mechanical winch on my Jeep pickup. However th
Money?? BTW, while for most worm drives you can't "back drive" them, for some you can. It depends on the worm gear pitch and tooth shapes. I would imagine that you can get such a thing from a place t

I have been hoping that a knowledgeable towertalkian would offer a posting on how brake winches work but again nobody has. I am not a mechanical or civil engineer and know little about winches, howev
When I examined the winch on my HDX-555, it seemed that the brake mechanism applied permanent friction between the shaft and the toothed wheel, but when the cable was being wound in the pawl allowed
