The problem with a rope jamming in a pulley is that the rope (or cord)  is "too small" for the pulley. The situation you describe can happen quite easily if you are using "parachute cord" for example

I know a ham who uses the PVC electrical "sweeps" instead of pulleys. I haven't tried that myself, but it seems like a good idea IF the sweep isn't attached to something that moves such as a tree. Ch
