I needed some replacement u-bolts for my Rohn 45 rotor shelf, as I had misplaced the original ones while the shelf was in storage the past 10 years. These are the Rohn JR51A, which Hill Radio shows a

I've been pleasantly surprised by Grainger's in-stock galvanized bolt & u-bolt selection. I recently needed *square* 4" opening u-bolts. These are available everywhere in smaller sizes at trailer sup

I've heard that you have to be careful sourcing hardware for a tower, especially from a non-tower manufacturer. It has to do with the galvanizing. From what I've been told, the non-tower intended har

Unfortunately many folks don't know plated vs galvanizing. Plated is shiny and dead easy to screw a nut onto a bolt. Good galvanizing looks dull gray if it has been any  reasonable time since galvani

Zinc corrodes about 1/30 the rate of steel per year when exposed outdoors. Add salt to the air and erosion is much faster. Zn is also sacrificial relative to iron so small scratches in the coating ha

Electroplated zinc parts typically have a chromate conversion for additional corrosion protection but as Grant said it is a poor choice for anything outdoors. I have had better luck with Cadmium plat

Just in case my comment about Grainger hardware was less than clear - Grainger makes it clear if their part is *hot-dipped* galvanized or not. The hot-dipped hardware that I've purchased from them is

Good galvanizing is also very rough to the touch. If it's been out in the weather a few years, it may be a dull gray, but still rough. Be sure to use galvanized nuts as well. Roger (K8RI) On 7/29/201
