I have contemplated using these if I could find enough of them (10) at a reasonable price. The article mentions aluminum but all the ones I have and have seen are steel. Either could be very usable,

Many of the poles in Herndon, Virginia are made of fiberglass. Periodically someone will run one down and you can see the material sticking up from the portion mounted to the base. They appear to be
