I'd guess that you're not using enough bias. Elecraft and others use 5.6K between V+ and the mic. You may also be wearing the mic too close to your mouth. It will sound better if you don't "close-tal

Steve, I'd also suggest trying the mic output unpadded and starting with 0dB HW gain. The schematics are not easy to follow/piece together but it looks like the Orion II has a 1K resistor followed by
