- You need that 3rd bearing in there first and I would bet that will fix your problem. The core is probably binding inside the coil from since it can not be true and straight without that 3rd bearing.

- Lumpy grease on the screw? In my Corsair's PTO it tuned poorly going down compressing the spring, there was a great deal of slip in the vernier because of a deep groove worn (crooked too) by the ball
