You really need to be more detailed describing how you will be operating: --mobile or fixed station? --bands? --SSB or CW or both? All radios are a compromise and if you are looking for some valuable
I have two Scouts which I use for camping and for emergency service at home on both cw and SSB.....I could not reccommend a better unit.....Good luck.....73.....Kent......N3KB _______________________
Hi Russ i owned a Scout for 8 years. they are great rigs for field use, and you don't ned a large battery to power one for a couple days. At the price they are going fow now, they are a real bargain.
Russ, Several times I have almost bought a Scout but ended up buying an Argosy instead. An older TenTec rig with easy opperation and no modules to lose. The Argosy has a strong alumnium case and very
Humm... the Ten tec scout.... I own four scouts right now. They're really fine radios. abit with some quirks, as with any radio designed. the modules are a bit of a pain, of course, you don't need to
you described the scout perfect. Its simple to use, fun radio to play with and great to take along for trips or use as base station. FB on CW, and phone.Great mobile too! I use 7amp hour batts to ope
unh? what does it matter? the Scout does equally well in all choices you listed. (smile) besides the learning curve is ... well non existent. It's a simple, fun radio to play with! Ron, wb1hga ______

The optional filters also fit the 857 and are Collins mechanical filters, not crystal filters. For certain the CW filter is more effective at lifting a weak signal out of the noise than the DSP filte
Good show, Mike: BUT your Jeep symbol needs less vertical grill slots to look authentic! I'd cut it down to four. (not seven) :-) w8au _______________________________________________ TenTec mailing l
Mike The filters in the Argo V ARE DSP! Ron K3MIY oh poopie... forgot about the argonaut V... HF coverage. General receive with good AM reception. NO DSP! 25 watts has enough bang to get the job done
ok...got me there... should have stated, there's no dsp notch or noise reduction and for some reason, the dsp filters in my argonaut V seem much better than the dsp filters in my jupiter. even though
It is a great simple radio that has gone to Field Day with me every year since 1995. Rugged, simple to operate even by someone who is not a geek, can be taught to any operator in a few moments. Good
Gee, what does it matter? Hmmmmm. Weight could be an issue if carrying around portable? Power consumption could be an issue if in a remote area and limited resources? Gee, what if VHF might be a nice
I have a scout and all of the modules and it works well for what it is. it does a yeoman's job as a usable radio. If I was only taking one rig, I would consider a FT 857d with an atas antenna as an a
Mike: My complements on a nice, concise, objective comparison of portable radios. BTW, Scout stability can be improved simply by adding a small fan to the heat sink or backing off the power to 30 wat
In fairness to the competition... The problems with driver failures on the Icom IC-703 were limited to early production runs. Any newer radio or any version which has had the service bulletins perfor
