My Centurion 422b amp is sick. With initial application of power, in selected PTT and STANDBY modes (and un-keyed), the 3-500's are drawing 140 ma plate current (and barely perceptible grid current).
Forgot to mention that I also meggered grid-to-cathode, plate-to-grid, plate-to-cathode at 1KV on both 3-500's (cold). Both passed. 73, Allen--W7GIF -- Original Message -- Sent: Sunday, February 21,
Duane, Andy, and Carter: Wow. Just confirmed that the TO-3 bias transistor (MJ15001) in my 422b is shorted collector-to-emitter. Admittedly, 4 failures isn't a huge sample, but it sure suggests that
Gary, No problem here. I have a built-in autocorrect "uncorrector". I read "overcurrent" despite the autocorrect's corruption. I'm inclined to suspect the failures are due to a device mfg quality iss
Just completed an internal visual inspection of the failed MJ15001 using a 20X stereo scope with alternate light sources. Unfortunately my "shade tree" failure analysis/forensic lab doesn't include t
With installation of the JANTX 2N3055 completed, and three full days of on-air operation, the amp is performing beautifully...tube bias problem solved. Pre-test of the '88 date-coded JANTX 2N3055: hf
Thanks, Jim. I think something is amiss on the display board. All of the metered parameters (both meters) are reading about 1/2 their correct values. All the resistor values in the chain that are on
Hank: Thanks very much! You answered all my questions...even the one not asked, which was regarding the meter sensitivity. On vacation now, but when I return home next week I'll get after it. Thanks

Go back into the archives to Feb 21, 2016 for Centurion 422b troubleshooting help needed". My Centurion showed 140ma plate current when unkeyed in standby mode. Found the bias xistor Q1 on the FILAME
Floyd, I'm guessing that the 100ma Ip is in both the standby and operate modes? Same condition experienced here on my Centurion was corrected by replacing bias transistor Q1 on the FILAMENT-AC board.

Does anyone remember Project West Ford (or Project Needles) back in 1961-1963? Something like 1/2 billion copper needles placed in medium earth orbit to enhance military communications capability. Oo
Floyd, The procedure for calibrating meter indicated Ip and Ig on the 422 multi-meter is: 1. Insure that the unpowered meter is mechanically zeroed. 2. Unplug cable #4 located on the HV Rectifier-fil
Thanks, Loyd. All interesting info. I checked with Jewell-Modutec about one year ago regarding availability of the Modutec 920051 meter, and was told that it was no longer available. BTW, Mouser show
Eddie, Glad you're able to get the 425 healed. It's my favorite TT amp. Was the meter cost from Jewell-Modutec comparable with the cost from Galco.com ($34)? I'll certainly be interested in how you d
Just recovered from a failure of my Orion 565 that looks to be a result of ionic solder migration. Orion was purchased two years ago from original owner's estate. Details of his operation/use are unk
Gary, You're right. I should not have attached a moniker to the mechanism causing the observed condition. But, the condition observed was unlike any "whiskers" condition I observed during the early 7
