Apologies for replying to myself but in case anybody else wants to know it would appear that a Primo EM-60 or EM-100 electret capsule is used which means that it is almost certainly omnidirectional.

They can be OK if used at very close spacing to the intended sound source; the reduced gain needed at the rig input can help reduce reflections, blower noise and unwanted vox action. This is workable
