The key in socket is an RCA type receptacle and the only place to key the rig on CW.. The transmitter is keyed by supplying a ground to that receptacle. It does not matter whether you use a keyer out

It is not clear to me from your post exactly what is not working. If when you say "will not tune" that means when you turn the main tuning knob the display does not move - show a change in frequency
