Hi Rudy, They aren't needed if you're close to the water. Many have used verticals on the beach with great success. Especially since we are headed for solar minimum low bands will be more easily done

Beams or beam type gain is going to be required. We had pretty low beams at J6 but has a 200ft drop off to NA and EU. They worked pretty good. Probably not as good as permanent stations in the area.
