Simpler, cheaper transformer (no CT required, fewer turns), two diodes instead of four. Normally requires series, electrolytic caps, instead of single oil cap. Sent from my iPhone ___________________

Why did early amplifiers use voltage doublers rather than twice the secondary turns and a full wave bridge? I think it is for two reasons, to control the impedance of the power supply and to limit th

Seems to me the fault current would be determined by the capacitor bank value, not the transformer and rectifier configuration. I use a voltage doubler circuit in one of my homebrew amps, and it supp

The doubler had been used by hams since the 30's but made it into prime time with QST articles aimed at the Novice and other money challenged hams. National and Collins were early users and within a

Doesn't a full wave bridge give you better regulation as all capacitors are charged on both halves of the AC waveform, where as with a voltage doubler the capacitors are only charged on half the wave

Capacitance is cheap these days so doubling that covers the issue. Carl Doesn't a full wave bridge give you better regulation as all capacitors are charged on both halves of the AC waveform, where as

Hi Paul, No matter the rectifier, it's all about stored energy. To a point, all that matters in any rectifier is having enough energy stored in the filter to handle the load current between rectifier
