Hello, To mess with amps, a good dummy load is a must. I went to my storage, and pulled out a Cantenna of unknown provenance that I had purchased about 30 years ago at a flea market. Not knowing what

Most came with non hazardous oil although many hams did put PCB oil in them. Did it smell like oil or mineral oil? If so it was not PCBs. Go to an industrial paint supply or even your Ace Hardware st

Those are very expensive. Go look around on-line or at hamfests for carborundum resistors. Try to find four around 200 ohms each. If they are around 18 inches long or so and 1 inch diameter each will

Stop messing around with these lash-ups. You can buy a real Dummy Load, aka Bird, for short money. I got a 2500 Watt Bird for $200 over on the "evil empire" last year. With one like I got, you can re

Hi Jerry, I wouldn't use mineral oil in a HP dummy load. The Cantenna has limited capacity. Using mineral oil will further reduce it. Actual transformer oil is as close as your power utility's transf

I built my very own Cantenna-like dummy load several years ago. The resistor is a carbon/ceramic tubular one with silvered ends, about 4cm diameter and 10cm long. It's 50 ohm, but I have no idea abou

Manfred, Just FYI. Using your numbers and assuming the SWR issues are excess inductance, the inductance necessary to turn 50 ohms to a 1.5:1 SWR on 2m is ~23nH. If you were to put 8pF from the center

I usually go by taste. Seriously, the most-basic test is that PCB oils are heavier than water, while mineral oil is lighter than water. A couple of drops of of the subject oil in a cup of water woul

If it smells like oil it's normally oil. PCBs ... I've heard it described as a sharp or garlic smell. To me it was, just different than what oil or mineral oil smell like and I can't put a name to it

Larry, I didn't even measure whether the raised SWR on VHF is due to series inductance, parallel capacitance, or whatever. When I made that PI circuit, I was in a hurry to test a 1kW rig I had repair

OK, I'm going to buy a gallon of transformer oil, and restore the Cantenna with a steel paint can. I will probably replace the top, and just drill the new one for the little box and the overpressure

Before purchasing any transformer oil, go by your local electric company service center.  The electric companies use transformer oil by the 55-gallon drum.  Offer to buy a gallon.  The vast majority
