Howdy, I've been using the AL-80A successfully (apart from some rare arcing inside) for about 10 years off and on, including contests. Something that I've paid notice to only as of late in the 3-500Z

Something that I've paid notice to only as of late in the 3-500Z tube is a gradually increasing orange or light red colored glow in the metallic cooler wings(?) as one sends CW of SSB during an "over

The tube must show red on the anode or it will not degass. The gettering material in a 3-500Z is coated on the anode. Also the anode gets rid of heat primarily by infrared radiation. The lingering r

Id say thats pushing the 3-500Z a bit too much. Drop the drive down to 60-70W and the grid current to 125-150ma and the tube will thank you by working much longer. At 600-700W the difference at the o

Hmm. Okay. I have used amps (all GG) with these kinds of tubes and sometimes they glow more than other times. Why is this? It seems like it has happened when one of these conditions exist: 1. out of

Hi Kim! Just an addition to what others have replied: You don't say how much below 2:1 the SWR is. With a PI output, your SWR is probably good enough to be no concern at all, BUT you cannot trust you

Kim, Just as a point of reference, I run an AL-80B with a Taylor 3-500Z. When running SSB, antenna ~1.2:1, driven with 50-60W, normal voice peaks stay under 50ma Ig, power out is ~700 - 800W peak. If

Hi Mark, The only significant thing that makes the anode glow red is power dissipation in the anode. That is purely a function of the DIFFERENCE between plate input power and RF output power at the
