I have some very vice 1ma meters that I would like to use in my amp project. Question is, which method to use, wind shunts or use them as volt meters and measure the voltage drop across a 1 ohm resis

Shunts are better when everything is working normally, because they produce the minimum voltage drop, -BUT- in the event of current surge (due to an arc or whatever) it's more difficult to protect sh

Simple shunts also have the disadvantage of one's not being easily able to calibrate the meter. I like to start with an easy to obtain standard value such as 0.1 ohms for the shunt, and then calibra

No disagreement with Ian or Rich on this: just a warning. Stick to old fashioned moving coil meters rather than fancy digital ones, cheaper though they may be. I've had enormous grief from digital vo

A friend of mine had built an amplifier and his plate current meter would read very little current when the transmitter was keyed. In fact the current would decrease some times. He showed me the sche

Home made shunts work fine if you have the ability to accurately calibrate. Fine copper wire shunts also are not very temperature stable and suitable resistance wire is not a common item in small qty
