The nice thing about this design is that the microphone is apparently only needed to get things started. Once you have everything set up for dead silence the microphone is not picking anything up so

That would be correct. Assuming no inductor, the sharp leading edge is the portion where a diode is conducting and the output voltage is following the top part of the input sine wave up to the peak.
