When you say direct to the circuit breaker, what are you bypassing? If it is the High Voltage on/off switch, I'd suspect arcing contacts there. It doesn't take much there with the inductance of that

What I have read is that when RF Parts was working to get good quality 572Bs from China, many batches were returned to China, and it is thought that these wound up on EBAY and other sites dirt cheap.
