The Alpha 9500 is well beyond my price point. I have an AL-811H and a Heathkit SB-220. I was originally going to buy an AL-80B, but I decided to trade down to an AL-811H and use the price difference

No argument there, but most of us couldn't afford a $13,000 radio today. Luxuries, including ham radio equipment, have gotten cheaper in real (non-inflationary) dollars since the 1950s and 1960s. But

Yes, but usually the "way that is found" is to get on the air with cheaper gear. Hence the proliferation of Ameritron equipment, used SB-200s, etc.  I've never heard of a ham getting a second job to

OK, then the Henry was the wrong example to make my point. I don't think I've ever seen one at a hamfest, and as far as I know none of the local hams use one. They run Ameritron, Dentron, or Kenwood.

As near as I can tell, SB-220's go for about $500 in working condition, less if they need maintenance. One in really superb condition with all upgrades might go for $600. $500 seems to be typical. I

Sounds like you would really be using the parts from the old amp to build a new amp. That's no longer a "modification" once the changes snowball. _______________________________________________ Amps
