Good suggestion Jim. Don't forget to mention to the rest that the display
runs on high voltage. That's what the DC-DC converter is for. Do you remember
what its normal output voltage should be?

I'm finding that shorted and open electrolytic caps. I had noise in the
receiver. The noise changed when I turned on the sub receiver. To make a long
story short, the electrolytic caps in the DC-DC converter that powers the
florescent display were bad. There is a pi net filter on the 13 volt line that
supplies the converter. The caps in the pi net filter were bad. A simple check
of the 13 volt line with an oscilloscope showed a horrible noise on that buss.
After the cap replacement, the bus was noise free.

These radios are now old enough to be affected by intermittant contacts.
It all comes down to taking the time to clean a lot of contacts. Suggest
that you remove each connector around the receiver board and synthizer
board, apply a small amount of a good contact cleaner, with a q-tip. Take
your time and plan on doing this for a while. There's a lot of them and
the wire is old. Work the connector on and off a couple of times, then
move on to the next one.
After you have completed this, check for loose hardware, especially around
these boards and the power supply. If the sub-receiver has any issues, do
this first before any troubleshooting.
While you have it open, it's a good time to remove the fan, clean and lube
it. The fan rests on some rubber shock mounts. See if they have
hardened. If so, a well stocked hardware store will have something like
it.
This radio is put together with a ton of screws. They're all a little
different. Get them all back where they came out.
The bulb behind the meter is odd. Yaesu has them. The rubber skirt
around the main and sub VFO knobs can be replaced if it's swelled up from
hand oil. Yaesu has them too.
A little front panel cleaning with an old tooth brush can make it look
like new again.
