[Yaesu] VX-170 "LVL" vs "S" squelch modes

I've just gotten aVX-170 and would like to know the difference

in theory and operation between the "LVL" squelch setting (page 13 in the 

manual) and the  "S" squelch setting (page 18 in the manual.)
