The only way you're ever going judge this is for you to try each rig
yourself. I've had 2 Omni 6's and one MP. Since I'm not a contester and
mostly a rag-chewer, I sold them and now enjoy the pure cw sound of the old
OMNI C. For contesting, the MP has the features. Auto tuner for fast band
hops, ssb audio monitor for headphone operation, keyer that works, seperate
receive. That plus a general coverage receiver make it the obvious choice.
However, after listening to an MP for a few hours, an Omni 6 will really
sound good. You just have to decide if giving up the extra features is worth
the better cw receive capability. My MP had the Collins mechanical filter. I
thought it was really ringey and don't recommend it. Of course, if customer
service is a big issue with you then maybe the OMNI is your choice.
What you could do is buy a used MP and a new 6+ on 30 day trial. Use them
side by side for a few weeks and take your pick. The MP shouldn't be too
hard to resell.
