It appears that the FTDI chips will handle 5bit codes. The
issue is that FTDI (and other chip houses) have increased
the clock speeds to provide faster communication (up to
10 Mb/s) for non-communications purposes such as USB network
and mass storage. This change results in a minimum data
rate around 300 bps with the maximum "baud rate divisor"
values.
When looking for a USB to serial converter that will support
FSK without resorting to software solutions like EXTFSK with
MMTTY or "Software generated FSK" with Writelog, look for a
serial converter with a maximum data rate of 230 Kbps.
