Thanks for the heads up on the docking behavior. I had noticed the little
arrow pointers when I was trying to dock some windows, but wasn't sure how
they worked. I've now played around with it some more and finally got the
hang of docking things where I want them and adjusting window sizes to fit.
You are correct, there is much more flexibility in the V12 docking method
than in earlier versions.
The trick I finally discovered was to make the empty log file BIG. I spread
it out from wall to wall width wise and vertical about 3/4 of my screen
size. Then as I started docking the various windows I wanted the pointing
arrows would highlight a position box to show where it would go when I
released the mouse. It took a bit of playing around to get the hang of it,
but it seems to work well now. One confusing point was if I docked a second
window on top of an already docked window the visible window was the last
one docked. But below this window there suddenly appeared two little
buttons with the window titles. By clicking on the buttons I could toggle
the windows to move one to the background and bring the other to the
foreground. Not sure if I would ever want this feature, but it is something
to keep in mind just in case.

In this layout all the upper windows, including the band map are docked to
the main WriteLog desktop area. The three Rttyrite windows on the bottom of
the screen are all floating decode screens, from right to left, MMTTY ,
2Tone Clone #1, 2Tone Clone #2. The tuning indicator screens for all three
are on my second monitor to the left of the main monitor. This gives me
quick access to the various tuning indicator screens in case I want to
change the decode parameters for one or more screens.
In the course of laying all this out I have found a couple of bugs in the
band map window, at least when it is docked. With calls populated in the
band map a right click to "Remove all" or "Remove Selected stations" doesn't
work. The stations remain in the band map with no way to remove them. All
in all though this looks like a great update to the best contest logger out
there. I can't wait to try it out in the CQ WPX RTTY this weekend.

"scattered all over the desktop" is not necessarily the only way to
configure WriteLog. For a simple example, look at the screen shot on the
home page http://writelog.com/.
ALL the windows are docked in that screen shot. My own preference is
that all the windows docked looks a lot cleaner to me. Once docked in
the positions you like, there is a further optimization: turn OFF
View/Docked-captions and you get some screen space back. Having turned
the captions off, though, you have to use the resize sashes on the
docked windows to shrink them down to save the caption space.
This docking behavior is far more flexible than what was available in
version 11. That version only allowed one set of rows and columns. The
V12 docking allows any currently docked rectangle to itself be divided
again into rows and columns. For reasons I have not yet understood, many
WriteLog users have not figured out how to get any docking working at
all. All you have to do start dragging a window, hold down the left
mouse, and drag around placing the pointer on the various drop target
positions it shows--they change as you drag the window around. You don't
need to let go to know what its going to do--it highlights the target
rectangle that the docked window would occupy if you let go.
