This being my second week participating in 222 activity night, I'd say it
was a good one. Started out working K1WHS twice- once mobile on the way to
my chosen hilltop (surprisingly great signal from Dave while in motion),
and again once I reached the hill. Had a brief chat with Dave and WZ1V. I
then started calling CQ and was answered by N1SV. I heard K1WHS working
AF1T, but I was on the back side of Dale's antenna, and I could barely copy
him. I wondered if he had turned the beam around if I could have worked
him.
Turning towards the Southwest, I copied W1XR trying to contact me, and I
was pretty sure that I copied him saying my call , as well as his grid, but
I wasn't sure if he confirmed copying my grid. That would have been a new
state on 222 as well as a new VUCC grid, as I'm just starting to work 222
in earnest. Close, but no cigar! We'll try again. Maybe this weekend??
I then heard a station trying to work me, it ended up being N2SLO, but I
only got a partial call. Pete, K1PXE, was assisting him in pointing his
antenna toward me, but we never made the contact. I did work Pete though.
Thanks for trying to make that work for me!
I had noticed at one point the amp would stick keying on me. It's an RF
Concepts brice, which has no keying input, so it's RF sensed. I noticed it
while working Ron, and when I turned the amp off, he still said he copied
me 20 over- I was pointing right at him though. Last week, the
transverter/amp combo worked great. I swapped the jumpers that i had
running between the radio and transverter, and the transverter and the amp,
and the problem went away. They're different lengths of cable so maybe RF
was getting back into the anp keeping the RF sense thinking it had an input
signal. I'll have to investigate a little more before this weekend,
So K1WHS, WZ1V, N1SV, and K1PXE made it into the log. I already have an
LOTW confirmation from N1SV, giving me a new grid (I had worked W2SZ in
Massachusetts years ago on FM). Hopefully K1WHS will confirm Maine and
FN43 for me. Wz1V confirmed my one and only contact from last week for CT
and FN31. As you can tell, I'm a state and grid hunter LOL!
It was a lot of fun, though I only got 4 into the log. Thanks for everyone
for making noise on 222 and the great QSOs 9and the assistance trying to
get me a couple of more contacts.
Hopefully, I'll hear you guys on over the weekend.
73,
-Paul N1SFE (Sometimes in FN31rn, sometimes not!!)
