>From many years of VHF Contesting, it seems to me that running a KW (as
opposed to 100w) will mainly increase the QSO numbers as Dave says.
Looking at WZ1V's list, I was the only "DX" contact. From my observations,
running a KW with K3LNZ (back several years ago) smaller stations within a
hundred or so miles will hear that no matter where their antenna is
pointed.

W3IY's (SK) sage advice, "Listen for the weak ones", doesn't seem to apply.
Many times; your signal has to be well out of the noise to elicit a
response. Also with low power, often you are just not there if antennas
are not aimed at each other, i.e., ON4KST was the greatest thing since
sliced bread. BTW, it doesn't seem to matter whether Dave or Ron is
running high or low power; either can be copied.

If possible, low loss coax and an antenna mounted preamp really makes a
difference. I have tried to work stations running KWs who were more than
10dB out of the noise at my station who couldn't copy my 100w (-10dB). The
saying, "If you can't hear them, you can't work them" really applies.

Re: Exceptional signals, both ways with K1WHS last week, must be a narrow
pipeline up the spine of the Appalachans. East coast propagation seems to
be a completely different story. No real explanation. WA3EOQ
