Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. I will continue to monitor
this reflector and chew on these ideas over the winter (doing my
first rove in Indiana in January doesn't sound like fun right now).

Dean, you are not the only one to suggest sticking with the 746Pro
for the time being. I used it as the basis for a portable station
during a recent local contest where the only bands allowed were 75m,
6m, and 2m. The radio has three RF outputs and worked very well with
that combination of bands because I could connect my HF antenna to
one port, the 6m antenna to the other port, and the 2m antenna to the 144 port.
One suggestion was to just stick with 6m and 2m until I get a few
roves under my belt. That would give me a chance to work on antennas
and masts without spending a big chunk of money on radios,
transverters, and amps. I'm starting to like this idea.
