I'm amazed that I haven't seen this reply yet, but there is already a system
similar to what you are suggesting in the works.
Look up more info on HamIM. I don't have the url at hand, but I'm sure a
google search would spot it pretty quick. In a nutshell, it uses 2m FM
simplex packet with a TNC and computer. And it is 'legal' for ARRL VHF
contesting.
