Somehow we got into on or in ground radials. Not helping the original question.
Huh? The original question WAS about radials, and the references I
posted were about both ground radials and multiband verticals on the
ground and on the roof of a typical wood frame home. In the latter
piece, I addressed how to deal with multi-band verticals that need radials.
When I post a link to something I've written in response to a question
or topic, I don't waste everyone time with stuff that in the link!
And the performance of vertical antennas DOES depend strongly on soil
electrical properties both in the near and far fields, and to different
effect. That's also in the first link, in great detail. The difference
can be as great as 10-12 dB, 1-2 S-units! Conversely, horizontal
antennas aren't affected by soil properties, on by their height. That's
a VERY important factor when thinking about what HF antennas to deploy!
