Huh? The original question WAS about radials, and the references I posted were about both ground radials and multiband verticals on the ground and on the roof of a typical wood frame home. In the latter piece, I addressed how to deal with multi-band verticals that need radials.

When I post a link to something I've written in response to a question or topic, I don't waste everyone time with stuff that in the link!

And the performance of vertical antennas DOES depend strongly on soil electrical properties both in the near and far fields, and to different effect. That's also in the first link, in great detail. The difference can be as great as 10-12 dB, 1-2 S-units! Conversely, horizontal antennas aren't affected by soil properties, on by their height. That's a VERY important factor when thinking about what HF antennas to deploy!
