Correct me if I'm wrong, but per FCC 47CFR part 15, in order to receive a
FCC Grant (FCC ID)for an intentional radiator, which an 802.11 system would
be, the system is approved with a specific antenna type and gain. If you
change either or both the antenna type or an antenna with a gain greater
then that which was approved, you would be in violation of the Grant.

I don't understand these comments. Forget the ham radio part ... if I
understand him correctly he's saying that someone (anyone) could add a
couple of 24 dbi antennas to a standard 802.11 system and get greatly
increased range. People do that all the time. Entire neighborhoods
have pooled their resources to set up such ad hoc networks. As far as I
know it is perfectly legal for ANY traffic ... it's just a pencil beam
"hot spot". The only limitation would be the terms of the service
agreement between the guy at the far end and his service provider
regarding piggy back users.
