One more item I should mention... it is always preferable to use commercially
swaged aluminum crimps on wire ropes than rely on hardware store “U” bolts. I
once had a business that manufactured dumping devices which used electric
winches. When doing a prototype device we had 2 or 3 U bolts securing a wire
rope loop end and even though they were the proper size, the wire rope pulled
out. If you MUST use U bolts, make sure to wrap the loose end back into the
second from the end U bolt.
