Some of the rotator mfg prohibit pinning with bolt as you describe. Seems it may be too stiff of a connection. I like the idea of the bolts, maybe lighter duty so they shear before destroying what they are to protect. I have several tractor implements protected with shear bolts and shear them once in a while and never lost the protected shaft connection. It can be a PITA to have to replace them but if you upsize so they won't break then you aren't protecting anything.
