I know this is straying way off-topic, but people should also look into the possibility of 20-year solar leases. These are spreading in popularity. The homeowner's up-front cost is much reduced or eliminated, and he pays X dollars a month for 20 years. with net metering, that may be offset to some degrtee depending on the solar conditions in your area.

My preference is propane and solar. Propane because it doesn't eat and gum up carburators like the garbage ethanol laced gasoline available these days and solar because for the most part it is free (after installation of panels, etc). For hot water I do passive solar using three old 50 gallon hot water tanks run in series inside a glazed box. Caveat the solar parts of the above with the fact that I live just outside of San Antonio, TX which if you look at a map is about 200 miles south of even San Diego. We get plenty of sun here for solar.

My backup genset will power my electric raise and lower crank-up tower when installation is completed in addition to my workshops where I work on tower components and antennas. As a spin-off benefit of having backup power to raise and lower a tower and to work on tower and antenna related items I can also use some of this backup power to run my geo thermal heat pump/hydronic system, the two air to air heat pumps, the three independent air handlers, ERV whole house ventilation system, and the various accouterments of living scattered about the 5000+ sq ft of living space. Due to energy efficient architecture and system design our electric bill rarely exceeds $150 a month so it doesn't infringe on tower needs.

Did I mention towers and antennas enough?

I'm in the market for a new genset - probably a low-RPM diesel
generator,

Interesting topic but not germane to TOWER TALK where we talk about
tower and HF antenna system construction.
