It depends on whether the tower will see a lot of climbing or not.
A good quality house paint should be fine for a static installation.
The 45G and 25G here have and will see a lot of climbing and latex house
paint is not nearly durable enough for that. I use a good single part
commercial grade acrylic over a self etching primer for bare metal and
without the primer for galvanized. The paint is available in flat or
gloss. Machine gray works well in a flat although other colors blend
well with the background including a pale, flat, blue or brown.
it's durable enough to withstand a fair amount of climbing. OTOH it runs
about 2 to 3 times the price of latex house paint.
Work boots with dirt on them is like taking a power sander to the cross
rungs.
