Well, shoot.... that is exactly what I am looking for!
I don't mind picking it up, as I really enjoy that area of the country,
having traveled through the Yorkshire Dales on several occasions.
May even have a bottle of Theakeston's Old Peculiar in the fridge...
for sure have some of Tadcaster's best from Samuel Smith, I
still like the Old Brewery Pale Ale and the Porter among others
from that outfit. Afterwards, I could run up to York and have
lunch at one of my favorite pubs, the White Horse just outside
of Bootham Bar on the NW side... by the Minster... you know
the place...
So... pickup would be a pleasure.
Although I suppose I might have some issues explaining it to
Customs... and I had better not describe it's value, or effectiveness,
by saying " It's great... it's da bomb...." while doing so. ;-)
But back to the topic at hand... your design comments are spot
on. I liked the seller's "home" for the unit, a large plastic garbage
can, which is much of the ilk I am considering for protecting my
unit, but on a larger scale for this one.
I suppose one could also build a simpler matching unit, like
loading coils for the three or four bands of real interest which would
be like having four baluns-un-uns, or whatever they are... but make
them like individual loading coils for adjusting each band, and
maybe incorporate a choke balun for each one seriatim, and then
develop a remotely controlled switch to active each upon demand.
That might not be so overwhelming to design and build. Some
outfits, like x, make these for 160 / 80-75 meters:

This one works on 160 and 80-74 meters, but one might make
something like it for each band of interest, say 80-40-20 and then figure
a relay or other way to switch them in and out of the circuit. These
might be a better way to make a match than a 4:1 current balun or un-un.
Looks like the Racal unit on eBay is like having several of these with
automatic switching.
Interesting item. Thanks for the uptake.
