I don't know that there is a simple way to "calculate" equvalents. One
technique is to model solid objects as a grid of wires spaced by a
diameter or two diameters of the wires. However, that makes for a
complex model and all kinds of potential troubles.

One could do a FEM analysis of a cylinder and the plate and work it out
that way, too.

I think what folks have done is empirically adjust the cylinder diameter
until the model gives the same results as the actual antenna. Or, used
approximations that have been (hopefully) validated elsewhere (for
instance, there's a lot of information and test data on the NBS standard
Yagi designs out there that might be used to develop a empirical
approximation that's "good enough")
