I am doing this with my Butternut HF6-V
So far (7 years) still working fine.
I am using 17ga Galvanized Electric Fence wire, about $18
per half mile spool when I first purchased it.
With a reasonably large number of radials the current
in each radial is relatively low, so the smaller gauge
and added resistance of steel does not seem to make a
big difference.
