Thanks to everybody for the good suggestions. I'm going to wait a couple days
for some of the snow to melt off and head back up there. Will take the balun
out and do some continuity checks and also try to connect the analyzer/rig
directly to the antenna without the balun and see what kind of resonant
frequencies I see... if I see any at all I may assume the balun has a problem.
Meantime, I may try hooking the rig up the way it is and see if the radio
acts different then the analyzer.
I'll let you know what happens and may have more questions.

Remove the balun from the feedline and connect the coax directly to
the feedpoint.
I KNOW the balun is 4:1 ... that's not the point here.
If the balun is the problem, you should see a difference in 'resonant'
frequency, even though the SWR will be way high.
If that occurs .. replace the balun. If not, reinstall the balun and
check the matching section further.
