Good question. The *best* method is to use a sewn nylon loop sling as
a choker. You wind it around the mast (or any other irregularly shaped
object) and pull the end through the loop. You hook your hook, carabiner,
etc. to the loop and pull away. The sling works like one of those chineses
finger puzzles - the harder you pull, the tighter it gets. This method is
simple, safe and goes on in a couple of seconds. You can put a muffler clamp
above it as a safety stop but I've never seen one move.
Of course the slings are available from Champion Radio Products. These,
along with carabiners, are a tower worker's best friends.
