The total load on a Gin Pole (single snatch block at the top with no tag
line) is:
Gin Pole Load = Hoisting load + load line force required to over come equality
The other factors which are relevant to hoisting would be load
acceleration, if the load will "bounce" on the line, coefficient static
drag of the pulley, and if a tag line is to be used. Of course the actual
weight of the cable and pulley "snatch block" would also be calculated.
The best way to explain it would be as follows:
A pulley placed on a gin pole acts as a fulcrum with respect to the cable.
If you take a cable and place a pulley in the middle, then center and
suspend two 10 pound weights at each end, the cable would remain steady,
the load is balanced, and the gin pole would effectively have twenty pounds
+ your rigging on it.
You must apply a little more than 10 pounds on one side to lift the 10
pounds on the other side of the pulley.
