Interesting product, Peter. I had never heard of ALUMSLIP. Years ago I
used no compounds and never had much trouble taking aluminum tubing apart.
When I built a station in Aruba and I knew there was bad salt spray
corrosion there I started using Penetrox and then I also started using it on
my antennas in the US. Penetrox did a good job of maintaining a solid
electrical connection, even in a corrosive environment but it also dried
which sometimes made taking the tubing apart nearly impossible. I still have
not found a good way to separate tubing once the Penetrox glued them
together, yes I tried PB Blaster and other solvents. I know some stations
use Jet Lube which is a copper based compound and apparently it does not dry
however after seeing firsthand the severe effects of galvanic corrosion on
antennas in Aruba I now try to avoid using dissimilar metals as much as
practical.

Regarding the original boom question, yes use something to prevent the
tubing from getting stuck. I used white grease on mine. My homebrew booms
were cross bolted with 1/4" blots and the booms never twisted or slipped.

I use alumslip for more then 30 years on all joints.
Just disassembled a 204BA completely after about 20 years.
No problem to get any piece of tubing separated by just pulling them apart

What is the collective Wisdom concerning the use of an
aluminum-to-aluminum lubricant (such as Penetrox) between boom pieces,
one of which is swaged? I am reassembling several older monobanders but
using OWA dimensions here in the desert (no salt water corrosion). We
have nearly-continuous mild-to-heavy winds, 10 - 15 to 45 - 60 mph,
nearly year round, so the boom pieces must be solidly bolted together;
yet, I'd like the option of being able to take them apart again at some
time in the future.

TNX,

Steve K0XP
