The one I have is a Weller Pyropen WPA2 and it definitely has enough
heat and mass to solder a back shell outside. Cost a little more but
gets the job done.

Can these be refilled from standard butane containers or must one buy
the Weller?"
I have one which came with several tips. Outside there is invariably a
slight (or more) breeze blowing. My experience is that I can't get
enough heat out of the Portasol if I was soldering the barrel of a
PL-259. It's OK for small things which don't require a lot of thermal
mass. If you shield the area from any wind, you can do a little better.
If I were to use a Weller soldering gun outside (140 watt) and the
breeze was blowing, I might still have trouble.
They are fine for indoors for small jobs where you don't have power
easily available. Yes, they can be refilled from standard butane
containers.
