Hmmm,
Well, anger-management issues aside, I think the original post was regarding
protecting the metal below grade.
While I won't dispute that boiled linseed oil would be a good protectant
above grade, I think below grade it would leech away returning the metal
back to the cathodic corrosion that K1KP referenced in his article in QST,
so the sacrificial anode is probably the way to go.
I also doubt there are any enviro issues with boiled linseed oil, being a
product of flax and all. As for used engine oil, I'd say the oil itself is
the least of anyone's concerns. I'd be more worried about all the
contaminants that come with it.

Well, I just have to say this - THIS IS TOWER-TALK, NOT the ENVIRO-WACKO
list.
Somehow I just knew that TOO MANY people would spew QRN crap about
recycling, enviro-CRAP. I get tired of it. I posted what I do and what many
others/farmers do. Many farmers pour their oil onto their fence posts so
they don't have to re-fence due to rust. And we don't care about the
enviro-babble of this VALDEZ-crap and thousands of gallons of oily drinking
water. It just doesn't happen. And don't give me numbers to TRY an convince
me of anything. Give me proof from WHAT YOU HAVE EXPERIENCED - REAL TIME
! Not numbers from someone you don't know.
I have oil wells on my propity and many millions of barrels of OIL below
me. How many gallons of water will that RUIN ?!?
none !
Now, for my personal oil change, I don't put sh8 back into the enviro as you
suggest. I pour it back into the fuel tank of my diesel truck and drive with
it !
Now simply put, all you enviro-wackos GO AWAY.
If you wanna blab about enviro, go to the enviro list or fall off your
tower. We're talking about/answering questions of practical tower stuff.
And for some reason, someone (like ALL of you) conveniently ignored my
comment about BOILED LINSEED OIL/ZIEBART preventing rust/oxidation.
Let's get back on topic.
excerpt from K8RI -
I don't know if it's still posted, but at one time "they" used to say
that each year do-it-yourself oil changes put more oil into the
environment than the Exon Valdese oil spill. Of course back in the old
days we put the stuff out in the gravel road, and the county would spray
the stuff on the roads along with brine. Those gravel roads would get
like concrete.
