It certainly worked for the Navy's VLF Transmitters
in Cutler Me with miles of antenna wire.
When I was submerged at sea copying CW on 18KHz from NAA,
in the midst of normal message transmissions from the
easily read Bohme keyer, a marginal, hand-sent message, 
"QRX, De-Icing" would preceded several minutes of key down.
